This year the Guelaguetza, described by some as the most colorful fiesta in all of Mexico, will be held on Monday July 20 & 27 in Oaxaca City. There is a 10am and a 7pm performance each of those Mondays, and a myriad of events through the week. Without a doubt, the Guelaguetza is one of my favorite events in all of Mexico.
Tickets will be available soon through Ticketmaster Mexico.
Here are a few pictures from the 80th Anniversary Celebration, held in 2012.

The Flor de Piña Dancers from Tuxtepec

The handmade costumes often cost over a thousand dollars and takes months of work to get it “just right.”

Yes! They use live turkeys for one of the dances.

Everyone wants to get into the Guelaguetza action

The precision and unity of the dancers is a sight to behold at every Guelaguetza

If you go, join the crowd and wear a hat!

Everyone, including our own photographer, Brother Joe, wants to join the fun! He’s the one on the left…
